Last week I had the opportunity to attend the 2025 edition of Water Innovation Europe: Copenhagen Calling: The future of Water is Smart and Resilient. Taking place outside of Brussels for the first time, the event gathered policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and innovators in the Danish capital to facilitate important discussions around a shared theme: Building a Water-Smart and Resilient Future for Europe.

Water Resilience Takes Centre Stage
Water resilience dominated the discussions, unsurprisingly, given the launch of the EU’s Water Resilience Strategy earlier this year. The strategy outlines how Europe must prepare for increasing water stress, positioning water reuse, circularity, and nature-based solutions at the heart of future policy.
European Commissioner Jessika Roswall opened the event by saying: “for too long, we have treated water as an infinite commodity – that cannot continue”. She also highlighted how water underpins both economic security and societal resilience. Her message reinforced that safeguarding Europe’s water resources is not only an environmental necessity but a strategic imperative for competitiveness and growth.
Water as a Driver of Competitiveness
As Denmark currently holds the EU Presidency, it was good to hear from Danish Minister for Environment Magnus Heunicke and Poul Due Jensen, CEO of the major Danish water tech company Grundfos, who both spoke about Europe’s opportunity to become a global leader in water technology. Addressing water challenges – ranging from scarcity to pollution – can fuel innovation, create new industries, and ensure that Europe remains competitive on the global stage.
This aligns strongly with the mission we pursue at HPNow: empowering industries and communities to manage water more sustainably through on-site hydrogen peroxide generation, eliminating transport and chemical waste while enhancing water quality.
A Call for Collaboration and Innovation
Another major theme was the need to accelerate the adoption of innovative water technologies. Multiple speakers, including Kinga Szabo Christensen, Deputy Director General at Dansk Industri, highlighted the role of public utilities as “living labs” – testbeds where new solutions can be piloted, validated, and scaled.
For companies like HPNow, such environments represent a vital bridge between innovation and implementation, helping breakthrough technologies move from concept to real-world impact.
Looking Ahead
The conversations at Water Innovation Europe 2025 reaffirmed that water innovation is no longer a niche topic, it’s central to Europe’s resilience and competitiveness. With the EU’s Water Resilience Strategy setting the direction, the next step is clear: scaling the technologies and partnerships that can make water-smart, circular systems the norm rather than the exception.
At HPNow, we’re proud to be part of that journey, developing practical, scalable solutions that support a more sustainable and resilient water future.
